100 years ago: Rise up. Today: Still trying. 𝗞𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗸𝗺𝗮𝗹 (𝘄𝗮𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹) 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗶𝗺𝘀𝗯ü𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗹, 𝗛𝗮𝗺𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 Built in 1923, during the Weimar Republic. Hamburg (like the rest of Germany) had lost tens of thousands of men in WWI. The grief and trauma were immense, but the monuments often carried an ambiguous duality: both mourning and a nationalistic tone of "sacrifice for the fatherland." Eimsbüttel’s monument is one of several similar memorials in Hamburg — each borough often erected its own. Later, after WWII, such memorials became more complicated in meaning, since they were sometimes used (or reinterpreted) in nationalist contexts during the Nazi era. Many of them still stand today but are seen more as historic reminders than as expressions of nationalism.
