I took a photo of Usher at a Sweet 16 party. My whole career I have avoided shooting things like weddings and families and the boring shit that is like such a big part of the photography industry. I have, however, photographed two Sweet 16 parties. The first one was for a friend who happened to be my merch supplier and he traded me a ton of Driven By Boredom hats in exchange for shooting two hours of his daughter's party. The second one was for a major music industry client of mine. Everything event I shot for him featured some big named artist and they encouraged me to resell the photos to my journalism clients because they wanted the press. So when his daughter turned 16 and he asked me to shoot her birthday party I couldn't say no. The party was so surreal because three hyped up and coming artists were playing to a bunch of high school kids including Dev who had just featured on Like a G6 which a huge club banger at the time. It was certainly the only children's birthday party I have been to that had a VIP section. He didn't stay long but apparently Usher was like an uncle to the birthday girl so he showed up at some point and I guess it was good they had a VIP section because the kids were mobbing him. Such a strange experience.
