PANews reported on September 8th that, according to News1, South Korea's National Planning Commission is considering granting a consortium of banks and non-bank institutions the right to issue a Korean won stablecoin. The Financial Stability Council will be responsible for oversight and licensing. This initiative aims to combine the stability of banks with the innovation of fintech companies. The relevant bill is expected to be introduced by the Financial Services Commission in October.
According to News1, Korea's Virtual Assets Committee will be established this month and plans to hold its first meeting as early as this month. The Korea Virtual Assets Commission, a policy advisory body established by the Korea Financial Services Commission (FSC) under the Virtual Asset User Protection Act, which took effect in July this year, will discuss issues related to virtual asset spot ETF approval and enterprise virtual asset investment.

🔆 South Korean crypto exchange employees out-earn staff at major banks Dunamu’s consolidated sales in the first quarter of 2024 reached $400 million, showing a 60.5% increase. Employees and executives of Dunamu, Upbit’s operator, have been receiving a bigger average income than workers at four major banks in South Korea. Citing data released by the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), local media outlet News1 reported that the average salary received by Dunamu employees in the first half of 2024 was 133.73 million won (about $99,500). The exchange staff’s earnings surpass the average salary of employees of some of the country’s major banks, like KB Kookmin Bank, Shinhan Bank, Hana Bank, and Woori Bank. According to the FSS data, the average salaries of staff in major banks were 116 million won (around $86,700).
